Our Family Christmas Eve Traditions

Christmas is by far my favourite time of the year. There's something so exciting and warming about it especially now that I have kids. I love everything about it...The present buying for friends and family, visiting santa, the kids nativity at school, costa hot chocolates, wrapping presents and not forgetting watching Christmas films on repeat! A couple of years ago I shared Our Family Christmas Traditions on the blog which I enjoyed writing so today I thought I would share our Christmas Eve traditions. This year we will be making Christmas Eve particularly special as my boyfriend will be moving at the end of this month so it will be our first year spending Christmas together.

1. Christmas Eve Basket

I love this Christmas eve tradition. I've been doing for the past 4 years now and it involves giving the children a box of festive treats on Christmas eve. Cosy festive pyjamas, hot chocolate, reindeer food, and a film to snuggle up with on the night before Christmas. You can see what we put in our previous baskets here: Christmas Eve basket 2013Christmas Eve basket 2014Christmas Eve basket 2015

2. Wear new Pyjamas

Every year I buy the kids and I a new pair of Christmas pyjamas which I put in the Christmas eve basket and it also means we get to wake up on Christmas morning in them. This year our pyjamas are from Marks and Spencer. They have a lovely selection to choose from for all ages so if you're looking for pyjamas for your family this Christmas I'd definitely recommend taking a look.

3. Build a Gingerbread house

We always build a gingerbread house on Christmas Eve whilst watching Christmas films or if like last year mummy left it too late to buy one so we didn't up with gingerbread men and Christmas trees to decorate instead! It gives the kids something to do during the day and means they then have some festive treats to nibble on.

4. See a Christmas Pantomime

Last year I took Amelia to watch Aladdin at our local Pantomime and the year before that we saw Cinderella. I haven't book this years yet but they are showing Peter Pan which should be fun and Harry will be old enough to enjoy it too. I think this is a nice tradition to start and we usually go on Christmas Eve and then come back home to snuggle down for the night in our Christmas pyjamas and stuffing our faces with Christmas food.

5. Watch Christmas films

You can't beat watching Christmas films snuggled up on the sofa on Christmas Eve. I love nothing more than letting the kids choose some of their favourites or watching an old time classic for the first time.

6. Take a family photo in front of the tree

Every year I've taken a photo with the kids in front of the tree. I'm not sure how many more years I'll be able to get them to participate but I'll keep trying whilst they are still young and don't mind.

7. Leave treats out for Santa and his reindeer

In our house Santa like Baileys so we always leave out a glass for him along with a mince pie and some milk to wash it down and we can't forget a carrot for his reindeer. I bought a personalised plate a few years ago so we now put all the treats out on that by the chimney.

8. Read 'Twas the night before Christmas

At bedtime the kids both climb into my bed and we read a few Christmas stories including 'Twas the night before Christmas. I always remember reading this as a child and it building up the excitement for the following day.

So those are our family Christmas Eve traditions. I'd love to hear what yours are below!
