We recently picked up the Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature Perfect Prep machine in the Asda Baby & Toddler Event. Having never actually made a bottle of formula in my life as Amelia was breastfed from birth I have nothing to compare it to however I decided to see how it worked and I'm extremely impressed! The instructions were easy to read and I had it all set up and ready to go within 10-15 minutes. You need to follow the instructions and run some water through the machine before the first use.

To pepare a bottle it is recommended to pre-boil the kettle, fill a sterilised bottle with freshly boiled water up to your required level, bring it back down to body temperature and then add in your formula powder. I can imagine that this would be pretty time consuming and annoying especially with a baby screaming down your ear for food who isn't very patient.

That's where the Perfect Prep machine comes in, Tommee Tippee claim that this machine 'makes a fresh bottle at just the right serving temperature in less than 2 minutes' Sounds impressive right?
So, how does it work I hear you ask! After you have filled the bottle with your desired amount of formula you simply select the number of ounces (from 4oz) required for the feed on the dial and the machine dispenses a small amount of water into your baby's bottle to kill any bacteria in the formula.   This sterilises the powder before placing the bottle back under the machine to collect the filtered cold water which makes up the feed to the right amount and to the perfect temperature for baby perfect for having to get up in the middle of the night!

The Perfect Prep machine is designed to help make preparing bottles that little bit easier. I can't imagine that having to get up in the middle of the night and making a bottle to be easy in the slightest especially if you are half asleep. The prep machine can be plugged in upstairs in either your bedroom or your babies for easy preparation. Gone are the days of having to run downstairs, make a bottle and wait for it to cool down before giving to your baby.

The machine has a reservoir to hold your water, which is in a filter that will need changing every 3 months or so. The machine will let you know when it needs changing which is great for baby brain!

I've seen a few reviews of parents saying that the machine is bulky and takes up a lot of room however personally I feel that its pretty compact and it's quite slim. It will sit on our counter top and it doesn't stick out leaving enough room to prepare food etc. You can even wind up the cable at the back which is great if you were putting the machine in a cupboard out of the way.

  • The bottle is always at the right temperature
  • The bottle is made up within a couple of minutes
  • Makes a fresh feed every time
  • Time-saving
  • No screaming baby
  • Can use different brand of bottles
  • Tray can be moved to different levels to accommodate different sized bottles
  • Free hand to comfort baby
  • The audible signal is quiet loud - more noticeable at night in baby's room
  • Smallest feed you can make up is 4oz - most newborns don't drink that much!
  • Having to set it all up initially can be time consuming

Overall I am very impressed with the Tommee Tippee Prep machine and can see how great it is for mums who can't or choose not to breastfeed. The machine is lightweight, stylish and can be used with any preference of bottle. We will definitely be giving it a go with baby boy if we are unable to breastfeed or even if I want a break as we never fed Amelia from the bottle. I shall post an updated review when we have been using the machine for a few months as we have only tried it out a handful of times to see how the whole machine works.

The Tommee Tippee Perfect Prep Formula Machine will be on offer in the Asda Baby & Toddler event from this weekend for around £65 which is a great deal! Be sure to check out the rest of the event as there's some great deals and offers on baby items if you have a new arrival or one on the way.

Have you used the Perfect Prep machine? What are your thoughts?

  3. It's a clever contraption but I still think I would make mine by myself. I used to half fill the bottle with boiling water and put it in the fridge before bed and keep the rest of the boiling water in a flask. When baby would wake up, I would remove the cold water bottle from the fridge, top it up with boiling water from the flask to make the perfect temp and then add the formula. It required a tiny bit of prep before bed but I had a bottle ready in less than 30 seconds when needed.
